Joining our Group
We are constantly searching for motivated and clever students who want to engange with us to answer exciting questions in fundamental physics. You can either start with in internship during your semester break, or join us for your bachelor and master thesis. If you have graduated with excellent marks, we are also more than happy to welcome you are PhD student. More details, also for postdoctoral researchers are given below.
Internships
If you have basic knowledge on electrons and/or programming in whatever language and have fun to work in the lab? It does not matter if you are young undergraduate student or already doing your PhD at a different institute - if you want to work for some time with our group, just write a meaning full application and we can see what we can do. As short side-remark: We can only two two to three interns per year and it is quite beneficial if you have a residence permit in the European Union.
Bachelor and Master Theses
Bachelor Students
You are in your forth term of bachelor studies and look for a nice research project which you work on for about two months? You have a solid understanding in either laboratory work, electronics or programming (or maybe even a combination of both)? You love fundamental physics questions in particular those within particle physics? We would be gladly invite you for a tee or a coffee to discuss possible projects within our group
Master Students
Master students are the backbone of our research, since they can investigate really new ideas and perform feasibility studies in the context of all of our projects. They are fully integrated in our research and several master theses in our group lead to publications at the end of the thesis, which is certainly a great achievement. Successful master students typically continue for their PhD, so we expect not only good marks during the master studies, but also ambition, self-motivation and the mind-set to get things done - essentially, we look for students, who love physics and want to contribute to something that is bigger than themselves. If you know what we mean, just drop an email for a chat.
PhD Student Positions
PhD student positions are either announced at inspires or people apply with us together for a fellowship from various funding organisations. You have to fulfill the following requirements to be admitte as PhD student in our group: You need to have a master thesis in the context of experimental or theoretical physics or machine learning, where you did own research for at least six months. You need to have a master degree in physics or computer science and have heard lectures in experimental particle physics. You marks should correspond to the top 20% of your faculty internationally or better than 1.5 in the German system. You must work independently and you should be used to work in an international environment with the willingness to travel for conferences but also for longer term stays at the experimental locations (e.g. CERN) or at partner institutions. A fluency in English is expected. A joint PhD thesis with other European Universities is also possible. We had highly successfull cooperations with France, Poland and Czech in the past year - so do not hesitate to contact us.
Postdoctoral Fellow Positions
Junior postdoctoral researchers directly after their PhD typically work on one or two projects in parallel so that they can expand their expertise. Moreover they are involved in supervising master and bachelor students. We annouce our postdoctoral positions typically on inspires.
Senior postdoctoral researches or Humboldt fellows become project-leader of one of our research areas and are responsible for all ongoing activities including co-supervision of PhD students. Similarily to the junior positions, we advertise our senior positions also on inspires. If you want to apply for a Humboldt fellowship (which I really recommend), please contact us directly whenever it suits you.
Starting your own Research Group
There are several funds available to get your own research grozp funding, for example an Emmy-Noether Research Group by the German Research Foundation (DFG) or an ERC Starting Grant by the European Union. If you look for a host institute and need some help in drafting the funding application, just drop us an email - we will gladly assist you. We can offer a thrilling environment at the University of Bonn and amazing students who could join your own team.
