One highlight of the week was the three-day MINT-EC camp for 14 students from local schools, which took place from Wednesday to Friday. Under the guidance of Dr. Maike Hansen and Sebastian Laudage, the students gained exciting insights into the world of particle and detector physics. In the mornings, the students expanded their knowledge on the subject in private lectures by Prof. Dr. Florian Bernlochner and Priv. Doz. Dr. Philip Bechtle. In addition, the students were able to get a taste of current research at the University of Bonn in the field of detector physics through laboratory tours at the Research and Technology Center for Detector Physics. In the practical part of the afternoon, the participants had the opportunity to assemble small particle detectors and gain skills in soldering. The highlight of the camp was the third day, on which the self-built detectors were used to carry out various measurements to record and characterize cosmic rays. After a small conference to exchange the measurement results, the camp ended with a joint pizza dinner.
The Week of the Particle World was rounded off on Friday with a movie night in the Wolfgang Paul Lecture Hall followed by a panel discussion. Under the motto "Particle Fever", the film of the same name was shown, which fitted perfectly into the theme of the week. To underline the authentic cinema feeling, popcorn and soft drinks were served to all visitors. Prof. Dr. Florian Bernlochner and Dr. Maike Hansen guided the 200 or so visitors through the evening. The film was followed by a panel discussion with scientists from the field of particle physics. Priv. Doz. Dr. Tatjana Lenz, Priv. Doz. Dr. Philip Bechtle, Lena Herrmann and Christian Nass gave insights into the current state of research and answered questions from the audience.
Overall, this exciting week gave an opportunity to delve deeper into our understanding of matter and engage with the exciting topics of particle physics in an entertaining way. We are delighted with the lively interest and the numerous participants and would like to thank everyone involved for a successful and exciting week.
